How AGS and Our Guardians Make a Real Difference
We believe that the work of a guardian is not only essential but also within reach for individuals with busy schedules. We're here to provide guidance, support, and an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.
A guardian's role is straightforward yet incredibly important. Adult Guardianship Services (AGS) is appointed by the Summit County Probate Court to assist individuals who are no longer able to manage their own affairs. Our focus is serving indigent adults residing in a community setting - a Skilled or Long-term Care facilities, Group Homes, or Assisted Living facilities - when they lack willing or able family members or friends to become their legal guardians.
A guardian's primary objective is to ensure the safety and well-being of their wards, working tirelessly to meet their needs. Being a live-in or hands-on caregiver isn't required in guardianship. Nor does it involve providing financial assistance to wards. AGS Guardians are considered Guardian of Person and do not make financial decisions.
Upon completing the initial on-line training, volunteer guardians are asked to make a minimum of one case contact per month, make decisions concerning their ward's necessary treatments, participate in Quarterly Care Conferences, and prepare an annual report / annual plan to be submitted to the Probate Court. All volunteers are assigned one of our highly trained professional guardians as a mentor and sounding board.
AGS is a caring and knowledgeable community of steady, insightful, and empathetic individuals who, together, make a palpable difference in the lives of others who just need a helping hand.
